Our History
1970
KSCSW is established
In the early 1970’s twenty-two social workers met for an organizational meeting which led to the development of KSCSW. The driving force behind this was Arvil Reeb and Bill Jett who gathered a cohort to help the organization grow.
1974
Licensure Law Passed
After three attempts, Kentucky passed KRS 335, establishing licensure for BSW, MSW, and LCSW social workers.
1975
Licensing Board Established
A state board was created to regulate the practice of clinical social work.
1976
Client Confidentiality Privilege Secured
KSCSW successfully amended KRS 335 so LCSWs gained legal confidentiality privilege for their clients, previously limited to psychologists and psychiatrists.
1977
National Licensure Exam Development
Kentucky helped lead the creation of a national licensing exam and the AASSWB, establishing a national standard for competency.
1992
LCSWs Recognized as Psychotherapists
An amendment to KRS 422A.0507 (Rules of Evidence) formally recognized LCSWs as psychotherapists under Kentucky law.
2000
Mental Health Parity Approved
Insurers were required to provide benefits for treatment of mental illness and disorders — a major victory for access to care.
