Earlier this year the effort for restructuring our Boards was delayed, recently there is a substantial “rumor” that Governor Bevin will be signing an Executive Order to restructure our independent KY Board of Social Work, along with 39 other boards that the Public Protection Cabinet is determined to restructure into “unit” boards before the end of the year. KSCSW and NASW-KY along with other professional boards have collaborated to maintain the position that our independent KY Board of Social Work must remain independent and not be restructured as part of an eight board unit. We must stress that restructuring does not save tax payer money because it is our licensure dues that support our independent KY Board of Social Work. In fact, our licensure dues may go into the General Fund and we are deeply concerned about how our dues will be used to maintain and support the current excellence, and future growth, of our KY Board of Social Work if this Executive Order is signed.

To be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker means having a master's degree in social work, hours of clinical supervision while working in a clinical setting and passing the CSW and LCSW national tests. It means being qualified to work in public or private settings, institutions, hospitals, clinics, businesses or homes. After working in a number of settings, I have, for the last 30 years, been in my own office in private practice. I like the responsibility, freedom and challenges. I start my day by dressing professional, getting myself, my Tibetan Terrier (the office greeter and guard dog) and my lunch to work a little early. I clean up the office, warm up the computer and review my schedule for the day. I schedule 4 to 7 clients a day, 5 days a week. Author: Jeff Yocom, KSCSW Board Member The KSCSW Board has joined with the National Association of Social Workers to send Governor Matt Bevin a clear message: Incorporating the state's Board of Social Work (BSW) into a single "Unit" Board with several other state professional boards will not serve the citizens of Kentucky. A joint letter to the governor from the Kentucky Chapter of the NASW and the KSCSW explained that this action, which is part of a planned executive order, "will seriously undermine the state's oversight activities with regard to the practice of social work, which in turn, will harm mental health consumers throughout Kentucky."

Attendees enjoyed a day of insightful instruction and hands-on experience with speakers John Patterson, MD, and Eric Wilkinson, LCSW. In the photo at left, John Patterson, MD, guides Winter Conference participants through a series of experiences to help them better understand and apply mindfulness to help their clients and enhance their own self care. Thanks to the Education Committee for organizing this enriching event, to all those who attended, and to our wonderful and dynamic presenters! |
